A grumpy park ranger on the verge of losing his job and his curious intern searching for answers from her past must work together to unravel their forgotten histories before their time together is up.

Park Ranger Grae McCrary has developed a disgraceful reputation since the wildfire that devastated the Smoky Mountains National Park two years ago. When his stack of formal complaints reaches an alarming height, Grae must take on an intern to convince his superior that he can work well with others or lose his job. Since he is the only one left to support his institutionalized mother after his father's death in the fire, Grae will do whatever it takes to keep his position. The ultimatum seems simple until Grae’s maddening yet captivating intern sees beyond his mask of misgivings and into the depths of his grief. 

After a breakup leaves her seeking escape, Sylvia Carr accepts an internship with the National Park Service. Found in the park after being abandoned as a young child, she hopes to uncover the truth about her haunting past before her mothers adopted her. Grae doesn’t make her role easy due to his misguided suspicion that she pulled strings to obtain the internship. Tempers flare after Sylvia discovers she is the primary target of Grae’s creative and disgusting tasks.

But as understanding deepens between them during their time together in the mountains, forbidden romantic feelings develop. When Sylvia encourages Grae to return to his late father’s home, they discover a series of journals that reveal their pasts may be intertwined. Sylvia realizes she must peel back the layers of Grae’s tragic history to uncover the truth about her own, or they will forfeit love and answers.
