Park Ranger Grae McCrary has always put his passion for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park first. After a fire devastated the park and claimed his father's life two years ago, his efforts haven't come across as he hoped. His superior gives him an ultimatum: take on an intern to prove he can work well with others or lose his job and tarnish his father's legacy as the late chief. The assignment seems simple until Grae meets his determined, heart-led intern.

Abandoned in the park as a child, Sylvia Carr hopes to uncover the truth about her haunting past before her mothers adopted her. After countless searches of her own, an internship with the National Park Service might be the answer. Then, she meets her disgruntled and tight-lipped boss and realizes that the mountains won’t be her most challenging uphill climb.

Whether it’s disastrous hikes, waterfall mishaps, or a search for a missing hiker, Sylvia challenges Grae when she puts herself in risky situations for the sake of others. As they are compelled to work as a team, disdain slowly burns into affection, and Sylvia encourages Grae to return to his late father’s home. There, they find a collection of journals written by Grae’s father that unveil their shared history. But the answers they find come at a price. They must reconcile their rediscovered pasts before it costs them the internship—or worse, each other.
